How to Win at Poker For a Profit - Texas Hold-Em

Anybody who tells you that the best way to win at poker is to have the best cards doesn't know how to play poker. The best way to win at poker is to read your opponent and their betting style. If you get good at this you don't even need to really play your cards. By that, I don't mean you can bet in to a hand with a 2 of hearts and 7 of clubs and expect to whip everybody. You need to understand which hands are playable while understanding the real game of Hold-Em comes down to how your opponent bets. Being able to read when the flop turns and they drop in triple the pot as a bet is the key to success. (Not that reading them will be that obvious, I was just making a point) But you also need to read the subtle bets and pay attention to what cards are turned over. People love to play a hand that they have already won with once in the evening. Heck, I have done it myself when I rode pocket 2's three times to the final table in a local tournament. But you watch them fall in to that trap and learn when to go for the pot.

If you are just starting out playing, the first thing I recommend is making sure you watch what everybody plays. People tend to have a very specific set of cards. Some people will play only the top ten hands and they tend to do very well. You will learn that better players are able to play a bigger set of cards because they know the odds of what they need to take down the hand. You will learn this too, but it just takes a bit of patience. Start out small and practice as often as you can.
